Nā Kukui O Waimānalo

Documenting Waimānalo

Core Elements: Video Documentation & Himeni

Our Mission:

Our Mission is to inspire the youth of Waimānalo and Increase youth cultural identity and leadership abilities.

Na Kukui O Waimānalo (NKOW) documents the manaʻo (thinking), moʻolelo (stories), and mele (songs/music) from esteemed leaders and kūpuna who are puna wai (source) of ʻike (knowledge) in the Waimānalo community.

In ʻŌlelo Hawai’i (Hawaiian language) puna wai is a source of water. For NKOW, we metaphorically think of our esteemed leaders and kūpuna as puna wai. Like the puna wai, our leaders and kūpuna hold such valuable resources that are necessary for our survival as Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians). We think of ourselves as the kahawai (stream) diverting the water and channeling it to where it is needed. Our goal is to channel and connect our puna wai to our ʻōpio (youth), who will flourish from the life-giving source that holds our cultural stories, knowledge, histories, and songs. Through such connection, we believe we can restore cultural pride, increase cultural identity, and restore Hawaiian as the dominant culture in Waimānalo. By doing so, we will mālama (care for) the future leaders and equip them with ʻike kūpuna (ancestral knowledge), Hawaiian values, and thought so that they know where they come from and will lead with righteousness.

Currently NKOW is developing short films that document the stories and leaders in Waimānalo. One of our videos interviewed an important community leader, Ilima Ho-Lastimosa, and received over 5,000 views on Facebook and YouTube. Our program wishes to engage other youth in our filmmaking process and cultural exploration.
